dear every book i have ever granted “best book ever!” status before now,

you have been replaced. hear that? Pounce, Wet Cats, Wet Dog, Underwater Dogs, Underwater Puppies, Shake, Shake Cats, Shake Puppies, Lick Cats, Lick Dogs, Dogs in Cars, Dogs with Old Man Faces: Portraits of Crotchety Canines, all you silly animals wearing hats and balancing on fences and hiding behind trees and writing poems, etc etc etc – everything i thought was so charming and adorable and worthy of great squee?

pack your bags.
hit the road.

peanut butter dogs have put you in the corner.

review to come. for now, just afterglow.

okay – peanut butter dogs, i have come to review you.

this book is still fantastic, even now that the afterglow has had time to settle. it’s a wonderful parade of HUNDREDS of pictures showing that dogs eating peanut better fall into two categories: goofy or monsters.

goofy:

monsters:

and by ‘monsters,’ obviously i mean goofy adorable monsters.

particularly this one, which is basically what jonathan banks would look like if you gave him peanut butter:

i absolutely love the photography here, and so glad the author quit his job in the blahs of corporate america to follow this dream because without this book, i don’t know how i would find the will to go on. where would any of us be without these little cuties to coo over?

this one is the dog version of my beloved maggie:

this book is cute and silly, but it also comes with a more serious message than the obvious “dogs look funny when they eat peanut butter.” well, two messages. one of them is – although it is tempting to turn your dog into a peanut butter monster like the ones in this book, you should only feed peanut butter to your dog in moderation and after consulting with your vet just in case your dog has a peanut allergy, which is rare in dogs, but we should always err on the side of cautious responsibility when it comes to our loved ones. these dogs were only given all-natural peanut butter in small doses and short sessions.

oops, you missed a spot!

and even more importantly – these dogs almost are all either rescue dogs, or dogs still waiting to be adopted. i really appreciate how many of the dogs here breeds that are problematic – breeds who have unfairly gotten bad reputations because some people are dicks who ruin good thing. so – lots of put bulls and rottweilers, and even some doberman pinschers, which i don’t think people are scared of anymore, but are always aggressive villains in olde-timey cartoons. no dog is inherently ‘bad,’ but any living creature that is abused is going to be more prone to lashing out than one that is treated with love and respect. but when they are given peanut butter, it’s nothing but love all around.

there are also a lot of older dogs here, which is great. rescue older dogs! give them kisses and peanut butter! in moderation!

in conclusion:

this feels gauche, but when i announced i was starting a blog, everyone assured me this is a thing that is done. i’m not on facebook, i’ve never had a cellphone or listened to a podcast; so many common experiences of modern life are foreign to me, but i’m certainly struggling financially, so if this is how the world works now, i’d be foolish to pass it up. any support will be received with equal parts gratitude and bewilderment.
