WELCOME TO AUGUST PROJECT!! this is the coloring-book-companion to The Adorable Circle of Life: A Cute Celebration of Savage Predators and Their Hopeless Prey, where cute widdle animals who hunger feast upon the flesh of equally cute widdle animals who willingly serve themselves up to these cute widdle predators. IT IS TOO CUTE TO LOOK AWAY!!

AUGUST 1: TIGER NOMS PANDA

or if you prefer:

AUGUST 2: LION NOMS GIRAFFE

in nature, it’s all fun and piggybacks

until someone gets kicky

AUGUST 3: BIRD NOMS BUGGA

if you’re gentle, here’s this:

if you want the truth about the old circle of life, here’s this:

AUGUST 4: SHARK NOMS SEAL

shark week finale! and what have we learned this week? sometimes you get the seal

sometimes the seal gets you

and sometimes you get the seal

AUGUST 5: CAT NOMS BIRD

moments earlier:

don’t mess with a cat.

AUGUST 6: SQUID NOMS WHALE? WHALE NOMS SQUID?

this one caused me confusion when i read the book this coloring book is based on, The Adorable Circle of Life: A Cute Celebration of Savage Predators and Their Hopeless Prey, because i’m not sure who’s winning here. which i already said. but it bears repeating.

FYI, this is the way it was colored in the other book:

more research is necessary to get to the bottom of this.

but feel free to place your bets.

AUGUST 7: HIPPO NOMS ANTELOPE

the best thing about this one is this teeny tiny human

why you so tiny, sir?

in researching “nature” for this one, i came across the winner of the ‘everything is horrible and no one will save you’ award, and while it is a video completely aligned with the ‘i give up on all of it’ of my mood right now, it should not be viewed by all. but it’s here. and it’s terrible.

these are less terrible, but give ’em time and i’m sure they’ll break you in some way. cheers!

AUGUST 8: FOX NOMS BUNNY

gentle

secrets or nibbles?

what? we hug with our mouths!

and then, asshole bird ruins lunch

but there’s a happy ending?

i don’t know what happened after that, but i assume the bird got eaten by a shark.

wheeeeeeee!

AUGUST 9: LADYBUG NOMS BUGBUG

for all of you who were boohooing the cute little mammals getting nommed, maybe you’re okay with buggas?

even buggas got enemies.

AUGUST 10: BEAR NOMS FISH

that’s okay, right? fish are delish! and the best thing is, their memories are so short, they forget they’ve been eaten!

bears like to cuddle a little before they eat their fish

and some just don’t know how.

AUGUST 11: LEOPARD NOMS WARTHOG

But lets leave these lovers wondering
Why they cannot have each other,
And let’s sing another song, boys,
This one has grown old and bitter.

AUGUST 12: WOLF NOMS SHEEP

okay, so just now when i was looking for naturepictures to supplement this one, i made a terrible discovery. you guys, there are RESIN TOYS of these things. here: https://www.oddworx.com/

argh and a little golden book version of that book!!

and i need to finish reading this later, but you can get a head start if interested.

https://www.thetoychronicle.com/tag/a…

all i know is that this is my birthday month and i am officially registering there. someone tell my dad.

AUGUST 13: WEASEL (OR MAYBE A STOAT, WHO CAN SAY?) NOMS BAT

weasels (or maybe stoats, who can say?) are very vicious, indeed. look at this one attack a donkey!

while a bat is gentle and enjoys being groomed

i decided to give y’all a gentle day to recover. don’t get too comfortable. but DO feel free to read this aesop fable about these two creatures, the moral of which appears to be “LIARS SUCCEED.”

AUGUST 14: SEAGULL NOMS TURTLE

personally, i think this one’s got it backwards. this is how it should have gone:

as far as i can tell, this

is just an homage

AUGUST 15: OTTER NOMS FROG

when an otter noms a frog, it looks like dancing

this guy takes the BEST photos of this subject matter. here are 4 of them: https://www.zacekfoto.ee/en/image/fig…

and here’s an otter nomming an alligator. for science.

AUGUST 16: RACCOON NOMS CHICKENS

i’m not fond of birds, and raccoons are adorable, so i’m in favor of giving ALL the feathered menaces away to those sweet little trash bears

besides, they’re raccoons—they’re just gonna take what they want anyway

AUGUST 17: OWL NOMS MOUSE

maybe he got away, though

is it concerning that all of these are starting to look like romance novel covers to me?

AUGUST 19: SEAL NOMS PENGUIN

so, apparently this

is a thing that happens in nature often enough that it is the first (and second and third, etc) result when GIS-ing ‘seal and penguin’ while INNOCENTLY seeking images of light carnage to supplement a coloring book review project

don’t even think about it, bub.

nature is weird

AUGUST 20: POLAR BEAR NOMS SEAL THAT IS ACTUALLY A WHALE

what a difference a day makes. i’m sure, had i posted this one before yesterday’s, you would all be boo-hooing the fate of that baby seal. but NOW, knowing what you know about seals, this is nothing more than JUSTICE.

but hey, i’m not a monster. here’s something cute to brighten your day.

i don’t think seals rape polar bears, so we can all just enjoy that footage without fear of what comes next.

OOPS, I KNOW THAT IS A WHALE, BUT WHEN I SAT DOWN TO LOOK FOR PICTURES, I GOT CAUGHT UP IN AN ANIMAL-PIC SPIRAL AND FORGOT, SO JUST PRETEND THAT’S A SEAL, OKAY?

AUGUST 21: COYOTE NOMS ARMADILLO

i don’t look at this

and think YUM, FOOD! but i am not a coyote, and i’m not here to get all judgey on the preferences of others. if i WERE a coyote, that would be pretty rad

nothing horrifying today, kids. here’s your moment of bloop

BLOOP!

AUGUST 22: MONGOOSE NOMS COBRA? COBRA NOMS MONGOOSE?

this one’s for you ‘fair fight’ types: this is not some fox bully picking on a defenseless bunny or a bear ravaging a fish; this one could really go either way.

even when the odds seem unfavorable

cuz snakes fight dirty

rude

AUGUST 23: OCTOPUS NOMS SEAGULL

it’s my birthday, so a bird is going down

i mean, look at this gentle octopus

and at how birds treat him

it’s only right that they occasionally fight back and slowly drown a bird with their gentle gentle tentacles. their gentacles.

happy birthday, me!

ok, i have to go over to another edition of this book because space is OVER!

holy cow: for the first part of this project, i was on an e-book edition!! how even does an e-coloring-book work?? anyway…

AUGUST 24: HYENA NOMS ELEPHANT

here is a link to an animal planet video that i found by following a headline reading: Hyena Eating An Elephant’s Butt Before The Elephant’s Butt Explodes In The Hyena’s Face. which you would have followed, too.

here’s the cliffs notes version, without those animal planet nerds giggling over it

and here is a link to a series of pictures entitled (not by me): Hyena hides from lions inside elephant carcass unnoticed, (you’ll need to scroll up for some reason…)

and a sample just for you:

ain’t nature grand?

AUGUST 25: DOLPHIN NOMS FISH

rapist of the sea noms chicken of the sea. you know what this picture needs? a bigger fish.

better.

AUGUST 26: EAGLE NOMS DEER

poor bambi

how do you feel about birds NOW? are you beginning to see the light? they are MONSTERS!

and wasteful to boot

birds. we just don’t need their bullshit.

AUGUST 27: LIONESS NOMS ZEBRA

unsurprisingly, the internet is FULL of images of lions nomming zebras, but because i know i have already horrified so many people in the course of this project, let’s skew gentle today.

and showcase some reversals of fortune

because, let’s face it, lions gonna nom. even if something only looks like a zebra

this version features a not-as-good-resolution of the incident, but it goes on longer and is funnier

so determined.

and in the “animal kill or romance cover?” category, i offer you these:

if the serengeti’s a-rockin’, don’t come a-knockin’

AUGUST 28: PYTHON NOMS ANTELOPE

aww, this little guy just wants to give HUGGAS! SUBMIT TO SEXXY HUGGAS!

i know a lot of you are squeamish about snakes, but i think they’re cool as shit. and look how funny they look when they are FULL OF ANTELOPE!

what a chubbo!

oops, but that made him self-conscious and now he’s gonna get rid of that meal:

https://imgur.com/cY51OCE

for the life of me, i can’t get that image to load here, so you’re gonna have to click it yourself if you wanna see a python barf up an antelope. don’t be coy, you know you want to. haha – i can add it on blog, but not goodreads. BLOGWIN!

AUGUST 29: SPIDER NOMS BUTTERFLY

spiders…at first they are charming and sweet, pooping compliments out of their butt at you

but then they go all Single White Female, stealing your clothes and eating you alive

good thing your mom’s such a badass

AUGUST 30: CROCODILE NOMS MONKEY

here is a link to an indian folktale called The Monkey and the Crocodile in which a female crocodile cruelly tries to ruin the friendship between her husband and a monkey and everyone is sad at the end but no one gets nommed.

in nature, monkeys get nommed all the time, but honestly – can you blame a crocodile for nomming when monkeys are clearly asking for it, baiting them the way they do?

here are some additional Great Moments in Natural History that totally happened between the two species:

for our purposes, monkeys can also be apes and crocodiles can also be alligators, despite how many taxonomy nerds this will irritate.

AUGUST 31: HEDGEHOG NOMS SNAKE

i could not find enough fun images of this delicious duo, and i hate to go out on a sad trombone of a meal, so instead, here is a game called TOO! MANY! SNAKES!

you can play it yourself at home, if you wish. just make sure someone is filming it.

and, because FOR SOME REASON there wasn’t a coloring-page to correspond with this match-up, i will just drop it into this extra space i have here.

SNAKE VEXED BY CAT WHILE BEING NOMMED BY FROG

AND THAT WAS AUGUST PROJECT!

thanks, nature!

this feels gauche, but when i announced i was starting a blog, everyone assured me this is a thing that is done. i’m not on facebook, i’ve never had a cellphone or listened to a podcast; so many common experiences of modern life are foreign to me, but i’m certainly struggling financially, so if this is how the world works now, i’d be foolish to pass it up. any support will be received with equal parts gratitude and bewilderment.
