Who Cares About Karen? by Alison Lohans
My rating: 3/5 cats

BREAKING NEWS! i have now read this book, because
LAIMA is amazing and just had this lying around, and mailed it to me!! ME!!!
now i know the answer: laima cares about me.
so, i could rate and review this book based on how awesome it is to know cool people here on goodreads who are willing to part with childhood treasures in order to make a relative stranger in another country giggle.
or i could rate and review it based on the book’s merits.
because – pssst – the book is not very good. i mean, a scholastic book from 1983 that appears to have only been published in canada? how can that be bad?? a story about teens surviving in the woods after a car crash has left them peppered with injuries and nothing but wild mushrooms and a smooshed candy bar to eat? and the savior’s name is karen??? this should have been a home run! i love saving the day!
except karen’s kind of a wet noodle. i believe she is even referred to as a noodle at one point. oh my god – i just realized she is ana from fifty shades of gray! she blushes all the time, she bites her lip, she refuses to say what she is really thinking, she runs away from conflict, she falls down, and she lets other people make decisions for her. eventually she jumps on a man’s back. canada! way to predict trends!
but seriously – if this is one of your favorite books from childhood, i apologize. for its time, it was probably very good, and it only seems dorky now because most books from this time that were intended for kids are just super-dorky.
i mean, this was me in the eighties:
i was clearly a lost cause even back then.
and if i read my childhood favorites now, like Champion Dog: Prince Tom or The Little Gymnast, they would probably not be as wonderful as my memories of them.
so who can say?
i freaking love that she sent this to me, and i am going to treasure it always, even if i never read it again.
thank you laima – look what you have done…
