Fare Thee Well by Cathy Clamp
My rating: 3/5 cats
“You are the bringer of death?” His voice was the rumble underfoot now, drowning out even the scream in the background. He sounded seriously ticked off. “The new conveyor of souls, who has left this soul in torment?”
The bringer of death? I had to look then. His face showed a god’s fury. “Um. No, I don’t kill people. I just work at a morgue. And I’m not really a child. I’m fifteen.”
this is like a YA version of piers anthony’s Incarnations of Immortality series—it’s cute, but it’s a little fluffy, and there are some excesses that could have been trimmed off to make it read better; for example, i’m not really sure why dani-the-best-friend character is introduced into this, unless this is a portion of a longer work in which she becomes more integral to the story.
i liked the central premise, although it’s hard to find fault with lia’s actions—seems like it was the most respectful response to an unhealthy situation, with the information she had on hand. the story was a little silly in places, too many “ewww”s, and the beginning of the deus ex machina scene made me roll my eyes, although it ended well, with a good “out,” and i like the ending’s potential to turn into something bigger, maybe something in which dani is more than a drive-by token.
i’d read more in this world, but it would be when i needed one of those light escapist reads more than something i’d be dying with anticipation for pub day to arrive.
Who was Karen, and why was that bad?
why, indeed?
